Henley publishes book on a serial ax murderer in the Jim Crow South
March 13, 2026
Lauren Henley, assistant professor of leadership studies, published Inquisition for Blood: The Making of a Black Female Serial Killer in the Jim Crow South with LSU Press. The book explores the historical case of Clementine Barnabet, a young Black woman who confessed to the serial ax murders of Black families in the early 1900s — even though she was already in jail by the time more than half the murders occurred. Henley's book received LSU Press' annual Jules and Frances Landry Award in recognition of its significant contribution to the scholarship of the American South.
