Hocutt publishes chapter in edited collection for PhD students who are parents
Daniel L. Hocutt, marketing web manager and SPCS adjunct liberal arts professor, has co-authored a chapter titled “Give Yourself a Break: Juggling Rugrats, Experiencing Regrets, and Cultivating Compassionate Community” in an edited collection titled Parenting while PhDing published by Rutgers University Press.
The chapter reflects on the experiences of the co-authors as graduate students who were parenting while working toward their doctorates in English at Old Dominion University. Along with many other contributors to the collection, the authors offer takeaways for other parents who are also earning their doctorates. Their conclusion is this: “You will drop the balls you’re juggling. Resolve to give yourself a break.”
Hocutt completed his PhD in 2019. He worked full time at the University of Richmond and co-parented two daughters with his spouse while completing his doctorate. His daughters were ages 9 and 11 when he started the program. He co-authored the chapter with a colleague who parented two younger children while completing her doctorate and a colleague who bore two children while writing her dissertation.
