SummUR Sounds Blends Appreciation with Outreach
The soulful sounds of the Adrian Duke Project drifted across Millhiser Green as 330 staff and faculty gathered on May 22 for SummUR Sounds, one of the University of Richmond’s annual employee appreciation events. The event offered a chance to step away from daily routines and enjoy an afternoon of live music, great food, and opportunities to connect with colleagues.
First held in April 2022, SummUR Sounds was created to recognize the dedication and contributions of employees while celebrating the strong sense of community that makes the University special. The event’s continued success is made possible through the collaboration of teams across campus, including Human Resources; Events, Conferences, and Support Services; Catering; and Facilities.
“Events like SummUR Sounds remind us that by taking time to connect beyond our daily work, we strengthen the bonds that build community and ultimately create a more supportive place for everyone to grow and thrive,” said Geraldine Sullivan, chief human resources officer.
While employee recognition was at the heart of SummUR Sounds, this year’s event also reflected the University’s long-standing commitment to service. Staff and faculty contributed 50 activity packs to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Richmond as part of a campuswide donation drive. These packs, handed out through RMHC’s Happy Wheels program, bring comfort and distraction — and a bit of fun — to children in pediatric hospitals. UR’s partnership with RMHC Richmond spans more than a decade, strengthened by support from Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (CCE).
“The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement connects students, faculty, and staff to the Ronald McDonald House for ongoing volunteer opportunities,” said Derek Miller, assistant director of community-engaged research, scholarship, and relationships in the CCE. “During the 2024–25 academic year, three Bonner Scholars also served with the organization for up to 10 hours per week.”
